A Great Grenache

December 19, 2010

Welcome to the Frugal Vintner! Our job is to introduce you to low-budget wines (think $15 and under) that don’t necessarily taste low-budget. There are lots of choices out there for the value-minded oenophile – it’s just a matter of finding out which ones are the best!

Our first selection is a 2009 Ia Garnecha (Grenache). The Ia comes from Spain, where the hot and dry climate is just what the vintner ordered for Grenache grapes.

It’s a lovely dark purple color, with a very fruity nose. The aroma has hints of raspberry, spice, and even a touch of fruit leather. The flavor delivers on the promise made by the bouquet – this Grenache is very fruit-forward, a little “grapier” than many lower-budget reds. This is not a complex wine, but is easy-drinking, and would make a good introduction for someone who hasn’t yet made the transition over to red wine.

Snooth.com priced this vintage at $5.99. Our bottle was part of a “Six for $60” promotion at our local wine store. I don’t think anyone would mistake this for a $50 bottle, but neither would anyone assume that it rang up at $10 or less.

What do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
